The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering – Al-Nahrain University, under the generous patronage of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Iyad Murad Takhakh, organized a successful scientific visit to Daimumat Al-Afiyah Scientific Office – the official representative of MED-EL, a world-leading company in the field of electronic cochlear implant devices.
The visit took place on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, with the participation of a group of fifth-year students and under the supervision of the department’s faculty members:
Asst. Prof. Dr. Hasnain Ali Lafta, Asst. Lect. Dr. Samar Ali Jaber, Asst. Lect. Dr. Sarah Ashour Hamad, Asst. Lect. Dr. Safaa Laith Keilan, and Asst. Lecturer Hamza Fadel Abbas.
This visit aimed to strengthen the practical and knowledge aspects alongside the theoretical part of the Rehabilitation Engineering course, included in the Department’s curriculum. It also aligns with the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education). Furthermore, the visit served to open new horizons for cooperation with private-sector companies and to keep pace with the requirements of the labor market.
During the visit, participants were introduced to the latest technologies in the design and manufacture of cochlear implant devices and hearing-assistive technologies. Engineers from the company delivered informative lectures on the most recent technical advancements in component design and functionality, and they also highlighted the vital role of biomedical engineers in cochlear implantation procedures, device programming, and postoperative patient follow-up.
